Food for thought while reading this article submitted by Nancy Harrison, MSN, RN, CCRN, a clinical nurse in the pain center.
- Describe your experience with the numeric pain scale? Have you felt frustrated by the scale? Have you ever been in a situation where a patient's self report does not match what your nursing assessment might lead you to believe?
- Do you think a trajectory questionnaire would be useful for this population? Can you think of any other patient populations or settings (physical therapy? cardiac rehab?) this would be useful for?
- The pain experience is affected by our culture, by our beliefs about suffering. There are emotional and psychological components to the pain experience. What are your thoughts on therapeutic communication? On the placebo effect? Have you utilized these tools in your nursing practice?
- In the area where you practice, have you noticed a change in the medications prescribed for pain? For better or for worse- share your experience.
- Do you think it is possible or reasonable to have an opiate free (almost) emergency department?
