Catherine presented the following questions to ponder while reviewing the article:
- Patients are assessed pre-operatively on how likely they are to have post-operative nausea/vomiting (PONV) based on certain factors/risks (gender, history of PONV, use of opioids, etc.). Based on the factors listed in the article, what do you think is the most prevalent factor that causes post-operative nausea vomiting in patients post-operatively?
- Other than conventional medications that can be used to treat nausea/vomiting (anti-emetics, antihistamines, etc.), what are other interventions that can be used to treat post-operative nausea-vomiting during the patient's hospital stay?
- The article states that 26.3% on people in the study had nausea after being discharged home and 15.4% on patients in the study vomited when home. What are some things patients can be educated on prior to being discharged home to help prevent or alleviate nausea/vomiting while home?
